Frequently
asked questions
Why should companies meet the Challenge?
After an initial surge of interest in carbon removals, CDR purchases which are critical to financing the industry have not materialized at a rate necessary to scale. Without rapid expansion of the buyer pool for this market, projects vital to providing negative emissions to counteract residual emissions cannot be built and companies risk not being able to realize their corporate net zero ambitions.
Why is the benchmark to qualify so low?
This benchmark is intentionally low to ensure the G1K Challenge is accessible to a wide range of companies, regardless of their size or current climate commitments. The focus is on creating a broad base of support to accelerate the CDR industry and to ensure that companies can pilot CDR purchases to define how removals fit into their sustainability strategies.
My company has already bought CDRs in previous years; why should we care?
Past purchases are insufficient to address the needs of CDR suppliers moving forward, and satisfying the G1K Challenge will not only demonstrate continued leadership and support for CDR, but it will also support the need to generate the broad corporate support required to grow the industry.
How do I buy CDRs?
Companies can purchase CDRs directly from individual projects, through marketplaces, or with the support of a buy-side advisor. Please contact the Global 1000 or refer to the G1K Challenge website for additional resources to help to understand how to identify, diligence, structure and execute a qualifying purchase agreement.
How do I sign up?
Your company doesn’t need to do anything to participate! The G1K Challenge is an ex-post Challenge; we will assess companies having met the Challenge only once they have entered into a new qualified purchase agreement.
The G1K Challenge secretariat will actively monitor public announcements of CDR transactions, and will also note transactions that are socialized confidentially to deals@Global1000Challenge.org in order to track progress.

How to meet the challenge
Global 1000 will track public transactions of CDRs and update the leaderboard of companies meeting the challenge
If your company prefers to keep details of CDR transactions private, please contact Global 1000 at deals@global1000challenge.org to notify us of successfully having met the challenge
